the hut Winter 2012
Seed
potatoes.
These should arrive at the end of January.
The varieties that have been ordered are: Swift
(first early), Lady Christl (late first early),
Charlotte (salad and second early), Romano(maincrop) and
Desiree(maincrop).
Small amounts of the following ‘specialist’
varieties have also been ordered: Vales Emerald, Vivaldi,
Juliette, Valor and Pink Fir Apple.
All the seed comes from Scottish certified stock
guaranteed to be free of viruses, and the main varieties
will cost only 70p for 10 tubers and specialist
varieties a bit more.
Those who have not ordered their seed potatoes
are advised to buy early to avoid disappointment.
Onion sets
and shallots.
Round white, pointed white and red onion sets will be available as well
as yellow and red shallots (varieties to be confirmed).
Seeds.
January 22nd
is the last date on which we can accept seed orders for
King’s Seeds.
Growing
media, seed trays and tray inserts.
We have all you need to sow seeds and grow on seedlings, with a choice of
different ‘composts’ and a variety of different sizes of
tray inserts and pots, including fibre pots and Jiffy
7s.
Vermiculite and perlite are both stocked - they aerate,
lighten and improve drainage of composts.
Sands and grits, including the popular Cornish
grit, can be used for the same purpose.
All may be bought in small or large quantities
from 1 kilo upwards.
Advice.
It is hard
these days to keep up with the changes in the products
available to gardeners.
Many have been withdrawn from sale, and others
have been re-formulated.
A file of information about the products sold at
the hut, and another about garden pests and diseases,
will soon be available to visitors to the hut to help
members decide what they need.
Can you
lift and carry and have a few Sunday mornings to spare?
One of our
regular helpers has had to drop out for health reasons,
so we are a bit short staffed.
