SPOT THE ART IN THE GARDEN

EHS small garden for Hampton Court Palace Flower Show

Silver Medal Winner

We were very relieved to hear from the R.H.S. in February that the Society's garden entry, designed by member Annette Wood, had been selected for the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. It has been all systems go since then with Annette and her team busy sourcing plants, artefacts and materials. Annette's innovative design, entitled 'Spot the Art in the Garden' is intended to be an interactive, stimulating and educational resource which can be adapted for use in a school setting. Semi hidden in the garden will be features from paintings (e.g. Rousseau's Tiger) which visitors will be encouraged to search for after referring to 'Art Posts' along the boundary where each artist's work will be shown. The whole concept is to foster children's enthusiasm and interest in gardening, plants, art and artists.

Planting has been chosen to provide impact as well as beauty and includes bamboos, grasses, sunflowers, white lilies, white pelargoniums, blue salvias, nasturtiums, verbena bonariensis, calendulas, cypress trees, citrus plants, cordylines and of course water lilies (á la Monet). It should be a delight to see.

The Society is fortunate in receiving help both practical and/or financial from various sponsors and expresses thanks to:

  • Copsey’s Nurseries (Denvilles Ltd)

  • Beneficial Foundation

  • The Wren Centre

  • Daron Ford Motors

  • Tawny Nurseries

  • Lockheed Martin UK – Integrated Systems.

We are very grateful to Annette for her design and hard work and also to her very enthusiastic team of helpers who have a wide variety of expertise, willingly given.

Members benefit from:

  • A weekly distribution hut providing most gardening requirements at reasonable cost.

  • Nine free topical talks and four newsletters p.a.

  •  Outings by coach to gardens and shows.

  •  Annual 3-4 day coach holiday.

Membership is only £3 per household available at the Distribution Store, Washington Road Allotment Site (10 am to 12 noon Sunday mornings), at any of our widely advertised talks or in the Information Tent at the Show.

The Society could not be successful without the involvement of so many of its members. Members organise and help with the Distribution Store and many other tasks, which keep the Society running smoothly. Over 100 volunteers do so much to help make our Show the success it has become. Thank you one and all.

If you are interested in helping in any way throughout the year, please refer to the CONTACTS page.
